Tonight we hosted the first Help Africa Move Forward event at the Himalayan Institute Main Street center, in downtown Honesdale. The event was huge hit, with nearly a hundred attending from across the region. The Honesdale Rotary Club was a special guest, being recognized for their generous support for the HI Community Center’s establishment earlier this year.

At the close of the event, key members of Honesdale Rotary were invited for a special, joint announcement. Honesdale Rotary was so moved by the success of the HI Community Center’s first phase of service, they wished to join hands and support on a broader stage. Particularly moved by the announcement of the Kumbo Public Library project, they pledging their support and partnership to help make this project a reality.

Kumbo Public Library- New Project for 2008

November 22, 2007

We’re proud to announce the newest addition to join the HI Community Center’s family of projects – the Kumbo Public Library. From the inception of the Institute’s efforts in Kumbo, we had envisioned launching a public library, and in fact had already collected tens of thousands of books and related materials and equipment. All that remained was to find a building suitable for the library. After meeting with the Mayor of Kumbo, it was clear that the library had found a home. The Mayor took us to this building, noting the Kumbo Council (local municipal authority) had built it to create a public library several years ago, but was unable to finish the project as funds fell short. We’re proud to join hands with the Kumbo Council to make the Kumbo Public Library a reality. Stay tuned for more!

First Steps Toward Energy Farming Program

About 4 months ago, the HI Community Center launched a community tree plantation initiative, sponsored by Global Trees. These efforts are the first steps towards launching the Energy Farming program, starting with community outreach and sensitization. Our local team reached out to a number of local plantation groups who responded with great enthusiasm. In less than 3 months, over 10,000 trees were planted in nearby communities! These trees were all indigenous, environmentally-regenerating species, primarily targeting the denuded mountain slopes and sensitive water catchment areas.
